With the 2019 general elections fast approaching, leaders and elders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State, have unanimously resolved to conduct free and fair primary election for all the aspirants seeking the party’s ticket for the Delta State House of Assembly.
The resolution was reached at a well attended meeting held at the PDP secretariat on Tuesday, July 24, 2018, along Mariere Street, Agbor. The meeting which had Nineteen leaders and elders of the party including the PDP Chairman, Hon. Collins Bello in attendance, also include; Chief Philip Igumbor, Rear Admiral Peter Eluma (Rtd.) Col. Godwin Eboma (Rtd.) Prof. J.E. Alika, Chief Isioma Okonta, Hon. Sunny Ogwu, Cosmos Igbinijie, Mr. Peter Idion and Mrs. Cecillia Ogbonyeri among others.
Addressing the gathering, the Chairman, Hon. Collins Bello, disclosed that four aspirants were vying for the Ika South Constituency seat in the Delta State House of Assembly, saying that the PDP in the Local Government Area would not impose candidate on the electorate. Emphasizing that the idea of organizing primaries, is to choose a candidate for the party in the State House of Assembly election as stipulated in the Party’s constitution which is geared towards deepening internal democracy in the party.
Continuing, he stated that members of the party would collectively decide on who should represent them in the State Legislature; insisting that they will not encourage imposition of candidates, stressing that collectively they or will choose the person that will represent them, in order to deepen internal democracy in the party.
In their separate remarks, Hon. Chuks Emuebie, Col. Godwin Eboma (Rtd.), Mrs. Cecillia Ogbonyeri, Mr. Peter Idion; among others unanimously supported the idea of organizing a free and fair primary election to choose a candidate for the State House of Assembly election. They also advised political aspirants to spend less during their electioneering campaign. While appreciating the Chairman, Hon. Collins Bello, for his open door policy of administration, they further urged political aspirants in the council area to maintain orderliness in their electioneering campaigns and shun politics of hate and acrimony, urging that aspirants under the Peoples Democratic Party should see themselves as members of one united family.
